On Tuesday, H&M, Target and PVH Corp will announce a partnership with Microsoft, Waste Management and more than a dozen other academic, design and sustainable fashion organisations to establish a global standard for sharing information about fashion products.
Like a standardised food nutrition label, CircularID will provide a unique digital identity that lives with an individual garment throughout its life cycle. It builds on traditional garment tags by displaying details such as brand, price, dye process and recycling instructions at the point of production (called the “birth certificate”) and a log of interaction data during the product’s life cycle, dubbed the “passport”. The technology would allow garments to be “checked in” and authenticated at a reseller or recycling facility, and easily transferred between owners.
